New Year’s Eve celebrations in Paris turned violent as riots erupted across the French capital on Wednesday. Armed police personnel were seen detaining individuals and firing tear gas shells to deter the protesters. The disturbances were allegedly linked to Muslim celebrations following Algeria’s victory over Equatorial Guinea in Group E of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Paris ushered in the New Year under heavy security after riots erupted across the French capital following celebrations linked to Algeria’s 3–1 Africa Cup of Nations victory, forcing police to detain multiple people and deploy thousands of officers to restore order.
Authorities had earlier cancelled traditional New Year festivities along the Champs-Elysees citing security concerns, while shops boarded up and access to key areas near the Arc de Triomphe was sealed. Fireworks went ahead under tight control, as France mobilised tens of thousands of law enforcement officers nationwide to prevent what officials described as recurring end-of-year urban unrest.
And not surprisingly, Muslim car torching were up this year, reversing a trend over the past few years where they were decreasing.
